Kutlo Motseta
I believe that hard work pays and humans are capable of attaining anything they want to if placed in the right environment.
Armed with this belief I made a decision that I want to become a world champion boxer a couple of years ago. This was after I had achieved my goals of losing weight to address my health and general discomforts such as chest pains and shrinking clothes, having been about 100kg which is obese for a 5-foot 11 person. During my weight loss journey, I noticed that I had become stronger and fitter than I was as a sports enthusiast in my late teens and early twenties. I was the Eastern Province triple jump men’s champion at 19 years of age in 2002, I am 41 years old and have approached this quest to become a world champion with academic precision.
I previously practiced as a court attending State prosecutor, although I am a journalist by training and hold a BA Law (sub major philosophy) and Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa.
My knowledge of the sport has been attained through informal research and my findings are that I can go toe to toe with professional boxers in my weight category (welterweight).
I trained for athletics for four years before switching to boxing in 2019. My training regiment is no different from career boxers and my physical conditioning and fitness levels are at par.
I have been told that I am too old and I will be beaten by youthful boxers. There are about 13 annual occupational fatalities in the boxing ring, with at least two people dying from fighting this month. I however, trust my research and have prepared accordingly.
I am not a war monger; I am a devout Christian and have never challenged anyone to a street fight. My long temper, calm demeanour and age are some of the main reasons that surprise many about my decision. However, I consider it a contact sport like American football, rugby or a soldier going to battle. It’s a matter of heart, dedication and skill.
In July I will step into the battlefield to fight a youthful career boxer. I do not believe there is a boxer that has started the sport at this age and become a champion or a contender.
An International Boxing Association (IBA) local qualified coach said to me, “I have been training these boys, they are ‘hot’, they are potential Olympians, are you sure you want ‘that smoke’?” Or words to that effect. Similarly to Letsile Tebogo, who is one of the local athletics sensations, boxing stars Mike Tyson, Geovanti Davies, Shakur Steven and others were signed and all but in their prime in their late teens and world champions by their early twenties. I smiled and told him I am beyond confident.
Hence, I will take this historic step in July/August and challenge a recognised boxer nearing his prime, to a dual in the ring.
