The Gaborone University of Law(GUC) celebrated its 12th year in existence of what it described as making an invaluable contribution to the country’s economy.
“The first graduation ceremony was conducted in August 2008 with 19 students. The function was officiated by the late President of Republic of Botswana Sir Ketumile Q.J. Masire and we conducted our second graduation ceremony in August 2009 and the function was officiated by the former Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University Professor Bhebhe,” said Dr Antony Joseph, Managing Director of Gaborone Universal College of Law(GUC).
He said, “It should be a matter of pride for all of us to have an institution that has developed so well since its establishment, especially as an institution that was largely funded by private students in its infantile stage before the Government recognized our progress and development and began to sponsor students in 2011.”
The fledgling university graduated 1890 students this year and a huge jump in numbers from its modest beginnings. It has accredited 3 Masters programmes, 14 degree programmes, 23 diploma courses, 38 certificate programmes and 131 short courses.
It also boasts a diversity of programmes ranging from health and safety, human resources, computer courses and courses in early childhood education. The university that focuses on learner outcomes has 5 campuses in Gaborone and 2 in Francistown.
“Recently we opened a magnificent new vocational training centre in Mmopane where Batswana can be trained in fields that will equip them with skills that will permit them to escape the plague of unemployment in Botswana by being self employed,” said Joseph.
He said, “This training centre offers a diverse set of programmes including motor vehicle engineering, agriculture, construction, plumbing, hairdressing and a variety of other courses.”
