The Engineers Registration Board(ERB) has revealed that it will launch Discipline Specific Guidelines for civil, electrical, mining, mechanical and structural engineers to ensure that the quality of professional engineering services locally are consistent with international best practice.
It is expected that the envisaged guidelines to be developed in consultation with the engineering community and key stakeholders for implementation in April 2020.
“The Board has identified the need to establish standards of practice by various categories and disciplines,” said Dennis Olaotse, ERB Registrar.
He said, “Now most employers are employing registered engineers. If you are not doing so you are breaking the law.”
The guidelines to be developed will apply to people who have completed the education requirements of BEng or BSc qualification or a Washington Accord recognized qualification or equivalent or BTech qualification or a Sidney Accord recognized qualification.
The initiative is expected to bolster public confidence in the professional competence of local engineers, promote marketability of engineers in the employment market and ensure continuous professional development for those in the field.
“The guidelines are intended to support initial professional development and experience through good practice adherence,” said Clare Mosarwa, Standards Manager at ERB.
She said, “Standards will assist those registered in the Graduate or Registered Category to transition to professionals in their disciplines.”
The Engineers Registration Board(ERB) is a statutory body charged with the responsibility of regulating the activities and conduct of Engineers in Botswana as empowered by the Engineers Registration act(CAP 61:06, 2009).
