Botswana Insurance Company (BIC) Wednesday announced its decision to become a major sponsor of LKC Jaguars Rugby Team for this weekend’s Pre- Season Festival in South Africa.
The sponsorship worth P66 000 will help finance the team’s tournament preparations and kit during the five weekend tournament which will have school teams from Gauteng and the North West Province of South Africa.
“We pride ourselves in the development of the youth. This partnership is an investment into sports development and to our future ambassadors who will represent the country at a national team level,” said BIC Chief Executive Officer, Newton Jazire.
He said, “There is considerable evidence of sport’s role in delivering a wide variety of benefits to communities and individuals, including economic growth. Sport can help increase economic prosperity, provide employment opportunities and contribute towards raising aspirations and increasing skill levels.”
He further stated that sporting codes such as rugby are considered minority sports which do not afford them sponsorship opportunities. Jazire gave an example of how rugby has become a culture in South Africa and has created employment not only for players but for administration workers, technical team and other departments.
This was an important move for BIC because, youth empowerment and sports development is an integral part of the BIC’s CSR. BIC’s philosophy on sport is that it is a vehicle to help teach young people some great skills so they can become successful contributors to society.
Sports has played a major role in the development of household names such as Nigel Amos, Isaac Makwala, Amantle Montsho and other sporting heroes.
“This is a great move to have BIC sponsor us for this tournament. We are elated that BIC
is playing a major role in the development of rugby in the country,” said Jaguars Manager, Feddious Mutenheri.
Mutenheri revealed that one of the team’s vision is the creation of a fully- fledged Rugby Academy that will be built on the Livingstone Kolobeng College premises within the next five years. Through this sponsorship BIC has played a major role in making the vision to create a Rugby Academy possible
The LKC Jaguars Rugby Team will play their first match this Saturday with a team yet to be announced.
Livingstone Kolobeng is planning on creating a rugby academy, which is a step in the right direction. This will not only develop upcoming rugby players, but it will create a lot of jobs which will add impetus to the country’s economy.
