The BIHL Trust, the charitable arm of the BIHL Group, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting communities across Botswana by donating P500,000.00 to the Botswana Red Cross Society to assist with flood relief efforts.
This contribution addresses the devastating floods that have recently affected various parts of Botswana, leaving many families in urgent need of aid.
In addition, the BIHL Group has provided P40,000.00 worth of food hampers, while staff members personally contributed second-hand clothing from across the organization and its subsidiaries. These donations, handed over to the Botswana Red Cross Society last week, reflect the Group and Trust’s dedication to volunteerism and community support.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, BIHL Trust Chairman, Ngwatshi Enyatseng, emphasised the Trust’s solidarity with affected communities.
“Botswana has always been a nation built on unity, resilience, and a strong sense of community. In times of adversity, we come together, extending a helping hand to those in need. This donation is a testament to our unwavering commitment to these values. Through the Botswana Red Cross, we will reach 275 households – comprising 1,285 people – in Kgatleng District, the hardest-hit area. We commend the Society for its tireless efforts and pledge our continued support for future humanitarian initiatives as we work together to rebuild livelihoods.”
The Botswana Red Cross Society has been at the forefront of disaster response, providing critical assistance to displaced families and individuals. The relief efforts supported by BIHL will include:
- Cash assistance: 100 households will receive a one-off payment of P1,500 to purchase essential food and supplies, prioritising single women-led families, differently-abled individuals, and child-headed households.
- Education support: School uniforms and stationery for 100 children directly affected by the floods.
- Shelter aid: Assistance for 75 households whose homes were damaged, including 3,000 vouchers for highly vulnerable evacuees, such as women, differently-abled individuals, and children.
“We are deeply grateful to the BIHL Trust for their generosity and ongoing support,” said Kutlwano Mukokomani, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of Botswana Red Cross Society.
He said, “As of 6th March 2025, 8259 persons were affected by floods, and 250 people were in temporary shelters and we have sadly recorded nine fatalities. The number of people affected by floods may increase due to the ongoing assessments. The impact of these floods has been devastating, and every contribution—whether financial, material, or through volunteerism—makes a difference in supporting relief efforts alongside the Government and private sector.”
The BIHL Trust remains committed to uplifting communities in line with the BIHL Group’s mission to improve livelihoods. This donation highlights the power of collective action and compassion in building a more resilient and caring Botswana.
