The 44 Botswana victims of a bus accident that plunged 50 meter from a bridge at Mokopane on the 28th March 2024, near Mmamatlakala in the Limpopo province in South Africa and burst into flames were buried today in Molepolole with over 5000 people clad in black mourning in solidarity with their families and loved ones at the Molepolole Sports Complex.
The deceased members of the St. Engenas Zion Christian Church were on a pilgrimage to worship in Moria South Africa. The MEC for Health in Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba, was amongst local well wishers in Botswana along with St Engenas ZCC Pastor Peter Mathatha.
Ramathuba captured the mood saying, “We stand here with devastated hearts.”
Trec City Tours Bus driver Ogautfi Noonyane who was baptised into the Eloyi Christian Church in 2005, was buried with fewer well wishers clad in red and white flowing gowns with priests wearing long primarily white hoods in Thamaga, a dusty rural neighbouring village about 40km from where the primary funeral service with all the remains of the deceased now repatriated into Botswana and many mourners still struggling to come to terms with what happened.
Noonyane left behind a partner and a six month old son with his father capturing the solemn mood during proceedings by breaking down whilst making a vote of thanks. Family members were emotional and it was difficult to solicit comments around the incident.
“The Government has provided support in repatriating bodies and organizing the funeral,” said Setshwano Mokgweetsinyana, Uncle of the deceased.
The accident claimed 45 lives with the only survivor, an 8 year old girl.
