The Managing Director of Debswana Diamond Company says it is becoming increasingly evident that economic growth and environmental stewardship are not opposing forces.
He argued that they are two essential pillars of a prosperous future. At Debswana, he stressed that the company’s commitment to pursuing sustainability is not just a duty—it is an opportunity. An opportunity to lead by example, to innovate and to create enduring value for local communities and the planet.
Andrew Maatla Motsumi, Managing Director of Debswana Diamond Company, said “Debswana stands proudly at the forefront of sustainable practices within the diamond mining industry. We have set for ourselves an ambitious goal: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.”
He said, “This objective aligns seamlessly with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. However, this commitment is far more than a corporate initiative; it is a pledge—a pledge to our people, our country, and our planet.”
This dovetailed interchangeably with the theme of this year’s Consumer Fair, “Building a Sustainable Future: Balancing Economic Growth and Environmental Protection,” has set the stage for crucial conversations and innovative ideas for today and beyond.
Debswana has set for itself an ambitious goal: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This objective aligns seamlessly with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“We are investing in cutting-edge, energy-efficient technologies and practices that not only reduce our carbon footprint but also enhance our operational excellence,” said Motsumi.
He said, “Our transition to renewable energy is well underway, with significant projects focused on harnessing solar power to sustainably meet our energy needs.”
Motsumi stressed that Debswana is dedicated to responsible resource management, ensuring that our mining practices minimize environmental impact while maximizing economic benefits for Botswana.
Motsumi said, “The Botswana Consumer Fair holds immense significance as it offers a critical platform for businesses to showcase their products, engage directly with consumers, and network with industry professionals. This event is a vital support system for local enterprises, providing them with visibility, access to new markets, and avenues for growth.”
This aligns perfectly with Debswana’s commitment to empowering businesses not only within our mining communities but the country at large.
“For over 50 years, our nation’s economy has been anchored by diamonds. However, diamonds, as a finite resource, challenge us to begin seeking and nurturing opportunities beyond mining. We must discover our next “diamond” as a nation, and this journey starts with safeguarding today to secure tomorrow. By facilitating local business participation, the Botswana Consumer Fair directly supports our goal of promoting economic diversification and bolstering community development,” said Mostumi.
He said, “The fair fosters valuable partnerships, sparks innovation, and strengthens the local business ecosystem—crucial elements in driving sustainable economic growth. With 570 exhibitors and 36,000 visitors at last year’s fair, the Botswana Consumer Fair stands as a testament to the vibrant growth and endless opportunities within our business landscape.”
The participation and empowerment of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) was regarded as crucial to the development process, offering these enterprises unparalleled exposure and growth opportunities, thereby driving local economic development and innovation.
Similarly, the Traders Hub and Tourism Pavilion play pivotal roles in showcasing our diverse industries and attractions, enhancing cross sector collaboration, and promoting Botswana’s rich cultural and tourism potential to a broader audience.
Botswana Consumer Fair 2024 also serves as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and international collaboration. By bringing together diverse exhibitors and visitors from across the globe, it enriches our understanding of different cultures and facilitates meaningful connections that extend beyond borders.
This exchange not only broadens exhibitor’s horizons but also opens doors to new international partnerships and opportunities for innovation.
“Over the past two years, the Botswana Consumer Fair has demonstrated remarkable growth, affirming its status as a premier event in the region. In 2022, the fair attracted 34,000 attendees and hosted 550 exhibitors. Building on this success, the 2023 event saw a notable increase, drawing 36,000 visitors and featuring 570 exhibitors,” said Gorata Gabaraane, Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Fairground Holdings.
She said, “This consistent upward trend in participation highlights the fair’s significant role in fostering business opportunities and economic development within Botswana.”
