The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has reversed an earlier decision to terminate the temporary engagement of the COVID-19 Scorpions paying them with Ipelegeng funds.
Scorpions will continue to be paid at B3 scale and ipelegeng recipients under this programme will be enrolled in labour intensive public works such as maintenance works like erection and repairing of school fences, refurbishing classrooms, maintenance of clinics, construction of cluster fences, de-bushing of international boundaries, construction and maintenance of kgotla offices.
“The intention is to engage artesians as part of improving the quality of works and provide guidelines aimed at improving productivity of the programme. Further to that and in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, the programme aims at honing skills amongst participants to allow them to graduate from Ipelegeng to self employment or permanent employment in related industries,” said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in a statement in the National Assembly.
It continued, “More detailed guidelines will be issued to the Councils for the programme to commence in earnest at the beginning of September 2020, COVID-19 prevention protocols permitting. The supervisory aspect of the programme will also be improved at the Ministry to enhance accountability and co-ordination so that it complements other programmes such as the Constituency Community Projects.”
