With its high capacity and high-quality features, the recently launched Metro Ring will allegedly position Botswana as a leader in the telecommunications sector in the region say officials.

The Metro Ring is a milestone in the country’s digital transformation, which will strengthen Botswana’seconomy and empower efforts to foster trade and the growth of businesses and entrepreneurs.

Odirile Tamajobe, Managing Director, Liquid Intelligent Technologies Botswana, said “Today we see the launch of the first phase of the Metro Ring, which will bring with it lower tariffs for local and international calls and data products, making communication more accessible to businesses, and fostering growth and productivity.”

He said, “This world-class, cutting-edge telecommunications network will revolutionize the business landscape in Botswana while bolstering the country’s position as a growing economic hub on the African continent. Over 100 businesses stand to benefit from this Metro Ring in this initial phase, with more connections planned for Phase 2.”

With more and more people migrating to online platforms for their day-to-day needs, Liquid IntelligentTechnologies Botswana insists it is committed to meeting the growing connectivity requirements of the Batswana by unlocking opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.

Aaron Nyelesi, Acting Chief Executive Officer(CEO), Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority(BOCRA), said “The preamble of the Communications Regulatory Authority Act 2012 suggests that BOCRA is responsible for the regulation of the communications sector in Botswana, comprising among others the Internet and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs).”

He said, “The foregoing notwithstanding, BOCRA facilitates the growth of the Internet market as part its role to facilitate the uptake of ICTs. The use of smartphones has led to increased number of people with access to mobile internet especially among the youth.”
